Module title: Semiconductors (EX5)

Module aims:

This module will provide students with the essential background knowledge required for graduate level studies in experimental semiconductor physics. Based on a "wiki" principle, students will collectively compile a set of web mounted notes and links to topics The weekly seminars will be used to introduce topics, correct errors and guide students on appropriate content.

Provisional Topic List:

  • electronic band structure
  • effects of reduced dimensionality and quantum confinement
  • epitaxial growth and stained layers
  • structural and electrical characterisation techniques
  • basic fabrication of semiconductor devices

Learning objectives:

By the end of the module students should be able to:

  • quickly find information related to semiconductor research
  • critically analyse, and improve, web based sources
  • select appropriate semiconductor characterisation methods
  • understand the theoretical basis of nanoscale semiconductor devices
  • work collectively with other MPAGS semiconductor students

Assessment

Assessment of the module will be dased on constructive contributions to the wiki. At the end of the module students will provide a summary of the sections to which they have contributed and the module convener will verify this by examining the wiki revision history held online. Credit will be given for both original posting and editing material.
