Module aims:

This module aims to introduce students to the basic concepts of magnetic resonance and to demonstrate how the technique may be used as an analytical tool in the physical and molecular sciences.

Learning objectives:

On completion of the module, students should be able to
  • understand the basic concepts of magnetic resonance
  • describe the magnetic interactions which characterize liquid-state NMR spectra
  • predict and explain NMR spectra of small molecules both qualitatively and quantitatively

Syllabus:

  1. Introduction
  2. Classical treatment of spins
  3. Excitation and detection of spins
  4. High-resolution NMR in liquids (1H, 13C)
  5. Exchange spectroscopy in one and two dimensions
