Module title: Phase transitions and collective phenomena (SM1)

Statistical Mechanics aims to provide a macroscopic description of a physical system starting from knowledge of its microscopic properties. The methodology and techniques are widely used throughout the whole of condensed matter physics. For systems of interacting particles, the resulting macroscopic behaviour can be very complex. The lectures will describe how statistical mechanics can be used to describe collective behaviour in equilibrium systems, which manifests itself in phase transitions and critical phenomena. The importance of correlations and fluctuations will be discussed. We will also consider how some of these ideas can be extended to describe systems out of thermal equilibrium.
